The eyes

There are times when I've finished a shoot and I wish that I could make the eyes of my subject stand out more.  Eyes are the windows to the soul, right? Why wouldn't I want to make them as big and beautiful as possible.  I recently learned a simple photoshop trick that is so simple I find myself using it almost every time. You can be as subtle or crazy as you want with it-- I however, opt for subtle-- just sayin! Using the liquify tool set to bloat, and you can punch up the eyes slightly to give them a larger more open look and then really play up their beauty. I LOVE IT!  Here's an image that I recently worked on with  a young beauty and her feline friend.

Young girl & kitten edited with new background and enlarged eyes

I bet you couldn't tell that I resized  4 eyes in this picture.  It only took a few clicks of my mouse and then I was able to enhance the darks and lights in the eyes to make them more appealing.

Until next time~

A new gallery and features!

I'm so excited to say that I've found a gallery that looks like it will suit my purposes. The images load quickly and are not resized strangely. I also don't appear to be having any issues with image quality.  Fingers crossed this is it!

I have also added a comment section to my blog so if you have something nice to say (or not nice if you must) go ahead say it! I'm leaving captcha off for now (you're welcome). We'll see if I need to add it later.

What's to come?  I still have some tweaking to do for sure. Most of that will be so minimal and behind the scenes you will likely not even notice it.

What you will notice are client galleries and just in general more fantastic pictures. I will also be unveiling my encaustic painting portfolio but that will be coming after the site is more solidified.

I'll be blogging more-- hopefully you'll find it interesting :)  I'm making it a goal to learn a minimum of one new thing a day about either taking or editing photographs  because I believe that you can never stop learning in order to keep growing your art.  I do this for you, and me. So you'll hear about what I've learned and what I find inspiring.

Anything you'd like to see? let me know!

Until next time ~ Jess

About Me

Hey there, welcome to my website.  My name is Jess and I’m a freelance fine artist and photographer living & working in the St. Louis, mo area.

I’ve been in love with art and photography all of my life. I am a classically trained artist and I love working with a variety of material. I have been a photographer since 2002 when I bought my first film SLR.  The freedom and choices it gave me really took me from someone that took snapshots of friends and family to a person that made lasting and memorable portraits.  I still shoot film, but I’m working mostly digital these days.

I would be lying if I didn’t say that I love taking candid shots. I think they truly freeze you in the perfect moment of being you—relaxed, happy, and beautiful.  That being said there is something to be said about a posed shot.  You get my expertise in composition and posing to make you and your family all look your personal best, what’s not to love about that?!

My goal is to take both candid and posed shots in a unique way to not only make you look your best, but to also make a memorable and interesting piece of art that you would be proud to display in your home.

New Site

Welcome to the new site everyone! I'm Jess, the owner and artist at Ambient Designs. Turning Ambient Designs into a photography/ fine art website has been in the works for a long time. I still have a few bugs to work out but I feel like we're reaching a point where it is coming together!  I couldn't be happier. As you can see, the galleries are not quite together yet. This is the biggest challenge to date. I want a gallery that is simple to navigate, doesn't take forever to load and looks nice. Apparently I'm asking for a lot, because I haven't found the right one yet.  Stay tuned!

I'm excited to bring Ambient Designs to the world. If you have any questions, comments, or would like to book a session, just hit the contact me button and I'll be in touch.

Until next time

Jess
